JAMS (JOY FOR ALL MINDS)

A kayaking program for people with disabilities, offering
a fun respite opportunity for service providers and carers.

JAMS which means "Joy for All Minds" is a voluntary, non-profit organization - a program of Gold Coast Rec & Sport Inc - designed to bring kayaking, on a social and competitive level, to people with disabilities; and mental health clients.

Gold Coast Rec & Sport Inc was established in 1979 on the Gold Coast. It is a community based organisation and registered charity in Queensland, which provides sporting and recreational opportunities to people with disabilities.

more-2_1 In 2000, the JAMS program was formed by Mark Matthews whose heartfelt desire was to create awareness and insight into the personalities, abilities and potential of people with disabilities. Mark's brother was born brain-injured but through repetitive, intensive stimulation and sporting activities including kayaking, went on to hold trophies for competition at state level against able-bodied people.
more2_2 JAMS aims:
  • To provide the opportunity for physical and social development through kayaking
  • To recognize the abilities of each individual and help them to reach their full potential
  • To build confidence, trust and self esteem, increasing opportunities for social interaction in the community, breaking down the barriers for people with disabilities and those affected by racial discrimination.
  • Use activities to reach out, comfort and support families of participants.

The rhythmic repetitious motion of paddling is an excellent co-ordinator, helping the brain stimulate and strengthen both sides of the body, improve aerobic and anaerobic function. It is a great way to relax and enjoy the benefits of our waterways.

This program is designed to provide access on a social and competitive level to people with physical and/or intellectual disabilities, the indigenous community and anyone wishing to improve their health and fitness.

The program is suitable for people with all types of disabilities – physical, intellectual, mental and drug-related disorders.
